Disposal Stopped Working? Check This First

A few safe checks fix many disposals. Never put your hand inside the unit.

1. Press the Reset Button

Turn the switch off, then press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. Wait a minute and try again.

2. Free a Jam Safely

With the power off, use the hex key that fits the socket on the bottom of the disposal and turn it back and forth to free the blades.

3. Call (610) 489-2717

If it still hums, leaks or trips the breaker, call us. Do not keep running a jammed motor.

Garbage Disposal Repair

A disposal that hums without spinning is usually jammed. One that leaks from the bottom often has a failed internal seal, and one that leaks at the top or side usually has a loose mounting or drain connection.

We clear jams, fix leaking connections and clogged sink drains, and tell you when a unit is worn out and should be replaced.

Humming, Not Spinning

Jammed blades or a stuck motor.

Leaking Disposal

Loose fittings or a failed internal seal.

Bad Smell

Food buildup in the unit or the drain.

Slow Sink Drain

Clog in the disposal outlet or the trap.

Run cold water while the disposal is on and for a few seconds after. It keeps grease solid and flushes food through the drain.

Garbage Disposal Installation

We install new and replacement garbage disposals, including the sink mount, drain connections, dishwasher hookup and connection to an existing switch and outlet.

For most homes a 1/2 to 3/4 horsepower unit is enough. Larger households and frequent cooks may prefer 3/4 to 1 horsepower, which grinds faster and jams less.

Replacement Units

Old disposal out, new one in, same visit.

New Installations

Adding a disposal to a sink without one.

Dishwasher Hookup

Drain connection checked and secured.

Customer-Supplied

We install disposals you bought yourself.

On a septic system? Ask before adding a disposal. Food waste adds solids to the tank, and you may need to pump it more often.

Keep Your Disposal Running

Most disposal clogs and jams come from what goes into them. A few habits keep the unit and the kitchen drain clear.

Keep these out and your disposal will last longer.

A leak from the bottom usually means an internal seal has failed, which normally means replacing the unit. Leaks at the top or side are often loose connections that can be fixed.

Many last around 8 to 15 years, depending on the unit and how it is used.

A 1/2 to 3/4 horsepower unit suits most homes. Larger households or frequent cooks may want 3/4 to 1 horsepower.
